In a "Maze Oasis" bath mat, which is likely made from a porous material like diatomaceous earth (DE), capillary action is the primary mechanism for its rapid drying properties.
Porous Structure: Diatomaceous earth is composed of the fossilized remains of diatoms, which are microscopic, single-celled algae. These fossils have an incredibly intricate, porous, and microscopic structure, full of tiny channels and pores.
Adhesion and Cohesion: When water lands on the mat, the adhesive forces between the water molecules and the vast surface area of the DE's porous structure are very strong. The cohesive forces then pull the water into these tiny pores and channels.
Wicking Effect: These countless tiny pores act like millions of mini-capillary tubes. Water is rapidly drawn into the mat, spreading quickly across a large internal surface area due to capillary action. This "wicking" effect pulls the water away from the surface, making the mat feel dry almost instantly.
